If there is a through-line in my life it is learning. A teacher of mine once made the observation that learning is the process, change is the outcome, and changes there have been.
I arrived at ceramics post career. Putting my hands in clay led me from thinking to doing, moved by the feel of the earth and inspired to be of use.
I throw pots, vessels to contain sustenance - food and drink. I am motivated by the image of people who choose those pots, will use them, find comfort in them throughout their lives.
On occasion I make sculptures to capture an image, a truth, about our collective experience.
I may not know you, but my work may touch your hand or please your eye with something that brings you to yourself. Enjoy.

Larry Gilmour Artist:
My practice is grounded in drawing, but I enjoy the physicality of clay,so my challenge has been to find ways to integrate the two modes of making.I experiment with various forms, both hand-built and thrown on the wheel. When you move around a three-dimensional object, marks on its surface take on a narrative quality as images are revealed in sequence. Finding the images and marks that fit the form is sometimes a struggle; preconceptions do not always work out. My process is experimental, what holds my interest is the unfolding of a work as the possibilities arise during construction.

Julianne began putting her hands in clay in 2015 when she enrolled in various ceramic classes and workshops across the Bay Area. She loves the whole process of turning a ball of clay into a beautiful and useful object, throwing or hand building a piece, trimming, bisque firing, glazing and firing again to create something wonderful to hold and use everyday. Julianne works with many types of clay, often leaving parts of her pieces unglazed, showing the contrast of the glaze against the natural beauty of fired clay. She joined Gate 5 Clay in 2019 and is grateful to her ceramic community of clay enthusiasts.

I love clay! Can’t believe I passed it by during my earlier life. For the past few years since I discovered the medium, I have three areas of study/work/making.
Portraits from life. Life casting of subjects with plaster bandage. The following clay positive is modeled from a series of photos and sittings.
Pet commissions/from photographic images. (Deep love for my four legged friends)
My maker series / Bird Houses, Bee Hives and Hanging Pots. I enjoy making something useful, though I find these ceramic crafts more challenging than anything else, too many disappointments in the firing.
